HOW TO: Sheet Mask Routine

Do you know everything about it?

With the J-Beauty and K-Beauty craze, sheet masks have become a popular beauty product in recent years. Just as the name implies, a sheet mask is a thin piece of paper with holes for your eyes, nose and mouth. You lay the mask on your face, remove it and toss it away. Within minutes, you can get healthy and supple skin.

It's quick and easy, but it requires you to know more than that. Do you know the benefits of the sheet mask or the mistakes that you have been doing? Let's find out.

  1. Increase Hydration
Sheet mask work in wonders. It traps active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and antioxidants on the skin, forcing it to lock in the moisture and receive all the goodness. It also penetrates deep into the skin epidermis to soften and enhance its elasticity, giving a more plump and youthful appearance.

  2. Redefine Skin Pores
Clarifying sheet masks are the answer for those with combination or problematic skin type. It helps to control excess oil while cleansing the pores.

  3. Diminish Fine Lines
If you are consistent with your sheet masking routine, you will also find that it helps with wrinkles. Yes, that's right! Sheet masks with anti-ageing properties can reduce signs of ageing.

  1. Improper skin prep
You would want to start masking with a clean face. Otherwise, you could be layering the face mask on top of dirt and bacteria. Before I mask, I would usually double cleanse— one with oil and another with facial foam.

  2. You don’t take your skin condition into account
Before I start, I analyze the condition of the skin before picking a face mask. Depending on your lifestyle and the environment, your skin will require a different relief. It is also particularly relevant to those with sensitive or combination skin type, who are more prone to be affected by climate/weather change. Those with dry skin can opt for a hydrating mask, while those with a combination/oily skin can pick a balancing mask.

  3. You leave it on for too long
I am guilty of this! Unfortunately, leaving the face mask for extra time can damage your skin with unwanted irritation and dehydration. Hence, always follow the instructions stated on the packaging and set a timer beside you.

  4. You rinse your face after removing it

When it comes to sheet masks, never wash your face after removing it. Instead of removing the excess essence from your face, pat it into your skin. The facial mask includes hydrating essence and ingredients that are beneficial to your skin- in other words, if you wash your face, you are wasting all of that skin-nourishing goodness.

5. You are what you eat

The good old saying is gold. Invest in good quality masks for great results. I’d skip the cheap discounted masks from drugstores as they usually are made of strong chemicals that may harm your skin in the long run.

That said, here are 10 of my favourite sheet masks.
