Natural Supplements for Beautiful Skin (Fight Acne, Inside Out!)

There is no right way to say it, but true beauty does come from within. While we might have battled with the idea of developing glowing personalities in order to be adored; we now understand that this statement has much more of a literal meaning behind it. Starting right from puberty, some of us might have been blessed with a perfect skin, and some of us might not. I was lucky to have a head start in a good skincare regime that was instilled in me from my mom since I was twelve. Together with a healthy diet combination, I grew up with almost perfect skin.
Did you know that your hormone level reaches its peak in your 20s? I've always thought that when you reached your 20s, your skin will clear up and acne will become a thing of the past. That may not always be the case. In fact, in your 20s, you'll start having a surge in estrogen and progesterone around your menstrual cycle, which could cause period acne. It's crucial to understand what causes your acne, where does the acne grows at and sometimes it may be a cause of underlying problems.
If you've been following me on IG stories, you would have already known that I was struggling with hormonal acne the past few years. When I turned 22, I started to have huge cystic acne in clusters on my chin area a week before my period. This happened monthly, and I would use acne medication like Mario Badescu's Drying Lotion. It contains salicylic acid and calamine that can help eliminate bacteria and reduce irritation, even for those with sensitive skin. Though the chin and jawline are extremely common places for hormonal acne, it might come up along the sides of your face or down your neck as well.
However, in the past year or so, the cystic acne started to appear frequently, off my period cycle, and what accompanied those were clusters of whiteheads! Cystic acne is less straightforward as compared to hormonal acne. Though it is related to the flush of high hormone levels, it is a type of infection that forms deep below skin tissue and doesn’t easily heal with over-the-counter medicines. I began to search for multiple solutions to salvage my skin and also stop the pimples from reappearing. Seeking help from professionals, I spent $500 at a dermatologist that recommended chemical peels and blue light laser therapy. Though professional treatments can help to improve the skin condition over time, it may result in scary side effects like “sunken” skin. These would also cost quite a bit, so I am determined to find a long-term solution, starting with my diet. I always believe that 'you are what you eat'. Therefore, I made it my mission to uncover natural supplements to reduce and tame my hormonal acne.
RIGHT SUPPLEMENT TO REDUCES INFLAMMATION - FLAXSEED OIL
Inflammation is one of the key players in acne formation. Like other omega-3 essential fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid is found in flaxseed which is a potent anti-inflammatory supplement. It helps to change the composition of the oils that your skin excretes so that it is less sticky and less prone to clog within your pores. Besides clearing your skin, it also acts as a cleanser for your body system when it is consumed daily. Currently, I'm eating Natrol's Flaxseed Oil twice a day.
RIGHT SUPPLEMENT FOR YOUTHFUL COMPLEXION - GRAPE SEED OIL
A surprisingly effective way of treating cystic acne is hydrolysed collagen. Cystic acne often forms a crater-like scar that destroys the skin and fat and therefore causes the deepest acne scars. By including a collagen supplement in your regular routine, it can help speed collagen formation and tissue repair to heal acne scars. Your skin will become smoother and more hydrated to boot. Also, this supplement includes the antioxidant properties of grape seed, and vitamin C help protect against free radical damage. If you are already taking Omega 3 Fatty Acids, you can have it with Blackcurrant or Grape seed oil.
RIGHT SUPPLEMENT TO SUPPORTS IMMUNE SYSTEM - CALCIUM MAGNESIUM ZINC
Zinc, a trace mineral that plays a role in the synthesis of collagen in bone tissue. In other words, it plays an active role in cell growth which accelerates the development of skin cells necessary for clear skin. It also works to reduce the inflammatory response to bacteria. Magnesium, on the other hand, helps keep hormone levels balanced and the nervous system running smoothly— both of which are very important for preventing acne. In addition to Calcium, it helps with cell renewal and is involved in the production of antioxidants that help combat inflammation. I know that sounds like a bit much, but it's all in one supplement, and the combination of these nutrients keeps hormones balanced. Otherwise, you can opt for a multi-vitamin that includes Zinc and Flaxseed Oil to reduce the intake quantity.
Some other supplements that I take weekly is Noni Glow Skinfruit (here), I mix it as a shake and have it before my gym sessions weekly. Drink lots of water and a cup of iced green tea in the morning.
Please note that supplements may affect certain medications — consult your doctor before taking any of the supplements listed above. It is also recommended not to take too many supplements especially when you are young. The maximum dosage I'd recommend is 2 per day; however, it does depend on the type of supplement that you consume. Always bear in mind to read the ingredient label to ensure supplements are made with natural extracts and not added chemicals.
